There is so much about Denyce that’s inspiring, but for me, it’s the way she tells her story with true humility. Whether talking about the lessons imparted onto her being raised by a single mother in D.C. to her passion for preserving history by bringing hidden figure Mary Cardwell Dawson’s story to life, Denyce has a way of speaking her truth so eloquently. This is just the tip of the iceberg into the inspiration she brings into the world.
The first word that comes to mind when I think of Denyce is “light.” Every interaction with her is a joyful one. She embodies such elegance and grace, and it’s clear that her years as a successful opera star have not impeded her humility. She exudes such kindness, matched with an open heart that she shares with each person she meets. She is the epitome of graciousness and I’m so thrilled she is a part of Through the Fire.
Just as she’s done throughout her storied career, Denyce is continuing to break boundaries with her film debut in Through the Fire. As a Black female opera singer starring in the lead role of a feature film, Denyce is bound to open the door for many other artists who will be inspired to follow in her footsteps. This role was written specifically for her, and there seems to be almost a divine connection between Denyce’s story and that of Alan’s mother Nancy, who helped inspire the character. I love how this script is a bridge between their stories.
I hope that the world sees her as the dynamic artist she is, one whose talents naturally translate across art forms. By taking an artistic risk, she will elevate the world of opera and bring much-needed awareness and representation to the vital role Black opera singers have contributed to classical music. But above all, I hope the world sees how bright Denyce’s light is. I have no doubt that will shine through on screen.

I hope the world knows that Through the Fire was born from just that — fire. Alan has overcome so many obstacles in life to create meaningful art that speaks to and elevates his community. Every day, he is doing the hard work to achieve this, and Through the Fire is one of many examples of his dedication and passion for his craft. The film industry will only benefit from his stories, and Through the Fire is a crucial step in sharing his voice and light with the world.
