ACTOR'S SPOTLIGHT: **CANDACE ROBINSON**

(Pictured: Candace Ruth Robinson)

A riveting interview with Candace Robinson who originally played the role of “Mrylie Evers” in the 2018 Revival of The African-American Experience: A Walk Through Time. She now tackles the role of choir director “Mrs. Samuels” in its successor “Chapter 22: A Walk Through Time.”

Did you originally know the history of "The Legends" that are in this story, or did you find out about them because of this play?

I knew the history of “The Legends” prior to my involvement with this production. We all ought to be familiar with the distinguished legacies created by Mamie Till, Billie Holiday, and Fannie Lou Hamer!

Do you (cast members specifically) relate closely to your character?

I do.  Being a former classroom teacher – yet a lifelong educator – I can relate to Mrs. Samuels very well.  I internalize her character as a relationship builder with the NY 6. An individual must possess a special type of demeanor and spirit to foster learning in youth, especially with teenagers.  One must be relatable while being relentless in establishing relationships and this aspect of Mrs. Samuels comes through in this project.

Do you think the history of the Civil Rights movement is still prevalent today?

We are in desperate need to highlight the movement of the 50s and 60s now more than ever; so, absolutely, the Civil Rights Movement is prevalent and relevant in the present-day, African American narrative.  Modern stories of misconduct against people of color and those disenfranchised by abusers of power are all too reminiscent of the tattered past, in which my parents, grandparents, and ancestors endured. We must recognize our past and each take a stand to act to prevent future incidents of wrongdoings.

Do you participate in today's progressive black movements? And if so, how?

Personally, I do not affiliate myself with one particular movement.  My activism; however, is routine. I am an advocate for education, youth mentor, and an advocate for the betterment for all wherever and whenever I can.

Do you think this play and others like it are reaching the people they need to, to be effective?

Actually, I do not believe there are enough creative presentations, which highlight the contributions of African Americans.  In so saying, the effectiveness of projects like this play and others are not as impactful.

Do you think the music in this piece is an important part of telling the story?

Music is another form of storytelling; and adds a particular creative element to any performing arts piece.

Is being part of this cast and crew an enjoyable experience?

It has been a pleasure meeting and working alongside such a group of talented individuals.  Whether those of us are pursing this field as a hobby or as a future career, it is evident that passion to deliver a sound message lies within us all.

Where do you plan to go in this field of work?

Currently, I am content with pursuing acting part-time.  I am always appreciative of an opportunity to be cast for a quality role, crafted in professionalism.

What is it like working with the Director?

Alan has a passion and tenacity for the performing arts, which exudes from rehearsals to the ultimate production.

What is it like working with the Music Director?

Shanae is a talent within her own right.  Considering that Mrs. Samuels does not have a solo, I have not worked with her as much this go-round, but nonetheless, it is always a pleasure.

What makes “Chapter 22” so unique?

There is more music in this segment of the African American experience.

Are the performing arts an important aspect to the African-American diaspora?

Performing is inherent within our culture; and continues to influence every aspect of world culture – from education, to music, to fashion, to dance, to food… the list could continue. We have a duty and right to celebrate our strengths; and any time we can showcase our resiliency, all people must pay attention.
