ACTOR'S SPOTLIGHT: **MEGAN BROADNAX**

Today’s blog posting features Essence Jazz Festival Winner, Megan Broadnax as she discusses her role portraying “Jill Randolph” in “Chapter 22: A Walk Through Time.”

Did you originally know the history of "The Legends" that are in this story, or did you find out

about them because of this play?

I was familiar with only a portion of the history for each legend, but have since learned new information from this play.

Do you (cast members specifically) relate closely to your character?

I identify with certain aspects of my character. Jill is a boy crazy cheerleader without a care in the world. I’m certainly more reserved. However, Jill is very energetic with a bubbly personality and a passion for singing. It is my relation to those attributes that I use to fully develop the role of Jill.

Do you think the history of the Civil Rights movement is still prevalent today?

Yes.

Do you participate in today's progressive black movements? And if so, how?

Yes, as it relates to this play and the content that will be shared on February 23, 2019. Otherwise, no.

Do you think this play and others like it are reaching the people they need to, to be effective? No.

Do you think the music in this piece is an important part of telling the story?

It is important, not just because of the history, but because the director has done an impeccable job at selecting powerful songs for this play/skit. They are songs that make you feel and reflect.

Is being part of this cast and crew an enjoyable experience?

Absolutely.

Where do you plan to go in this field of work?

I will continue to allow God to order my steps in any avenue of the arts that He would have me to go, with singing at the top of the list.

What is it like working with the Director?

In short, I’d say it’s motivating and memorable. I

have known him for over a decade and have worked

with him on many projects. I am always honored to

be apart of an Alan R.H Nettles Production. He’s

          underrated.

What is it like working with the Music Director?

It’s delightful. Shanae has such a great spirit. I

have come to know through observation that she

will not tolerate low effort when it comes to the

arts and I appreciate that in her.

What makes “Chapter 22” so unique?

The cast members! When you put creative individuals in a room, you never know what you will get. I have seen this play come alive, because of each person playing a role in this production.

Are the performing arts an important aspect to the African-American diaspora?

Yes.
