ACTOR'S SPOTLIGHT: **PAMELA BENNETT**

Today’s blog features Ms. Pamela Bennett, an original player in The African-American Experience: A Walk Through Time reprising her role as “Billie Holiday.”

Did you originally know the history of " The Legends" that are in this story, or did you find out about them because of this play?

I knew about the legends before being in the play.  I am a retired educator.  I know my Black History.

Do you (cast members specifically) relate closely to your character?

Yes, I do.  I have been exploited at an early age by an adult figure, I have been abused by a male, and I have dealt with racism.

Do you think the history of the Civil Rights Movement is still prevalent today?

I would say yes.  For instance, Educational Disparities still exist for African-American students.  Example- Black K-12 students are 3.8 times as likely to receive one or more -out of school suspensions as compared to White students in the same grade.

Do you participate in today's progressive black movements?  And if so, how?

Yes, Tennessee State University has a program every year on campus that I attend.

Do you think this play and others like it are reaching the people they need to, to be effective?

I think so.  We have a complete new generation of young, gifted, and Black who are not afraid and are not tolerating ignorance of today.

Do you think the music in this piece is an important part of telling the story?

Yes, yes, yes.  These pieces of music are so important to get the messages out to people of color.  And what better way than through music.  You can relate to music faster than words.

Is being part of this cast and crew an enjoyable experience?

How can I say this.  IT IS A BLESSING TO BE A PART OF THIS GREAT PRODUCTION.

Where do you plan to go in this field of work?

As far as it can take me.  The sky is the limit.  Pamela Bennett
